Drumming Advice
and
Frequently Asked Questions

As a drummer and drum teacher, I get asked certain questions quite often.

To make things easier for everyone, I’ve written a few short articles so people

can quickly access my thoughts and ideas on these common topics.

HOW DO I TUNE MY DRUMS?
This is a surprisingly controversial topic among drummers. Unlike instruments such as violin, guitar, or piano, there’s no universal standard for tuning a drum set. If you ask ten drummers how they tune their drums, you might get twenty‑five different answers.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that the drums sound good. But I know from experience that hearing this phrase can be incredibly frustrating when you’re trying to learn how to make them sound good. That frustration is what led me to create two videos explaining the approach I use.
My method works well for me—and for many other professional players—but there are also drummers who find these ideas overly pedantic, time‑consuming, or unnecessary. In the videos below, I walk through my process and the reasoning behind it so you can decide for yourself whether it’s useful for your own playing.
